What does self-worth mean to you? Empty What does self-worth mean to you?

Hello everyone. I am curious as to what you think self-worth is? What it means to you? How you define it, and what it would look and feel like to have it.

It seems a central issue of CEN. Self-worth is a deep issue that we didn't quite get as children, and it's often hard to give it to yourself. So it would be very interesting to get your personal opinions and experiences. I hope to write something more rounded about the idea of self-worth in the future.

A question I sometimes find myself asking myself is "would I expect someone else to do this", whether that be work as hard, or tolerate discomforts; I realise that in doing these things "it's only me"-but if I saw my freinds or students treating themselves like that I would be worried. I think we often learn to get by on the minimum, as justifying putting ourselves first in our own lives is not easy

Motivating yourself not to set yourself different standards is exceptionally hard, especially if for your entire life you have been made to feel that as a being you are worthless-and perhaps what you do is worth something (so you invest everything into that-and further deflect from you as an individual with personal needs)

Hi Dandylion,

Its interesting how quickly we judge ourselves which is probably the biggest factor in our own self-worth.
I know I hardly ever put myself first as I have been taught that my own needs are not important or are selfish. To try and change this after 45 years is very hard, but i do try. The only way this seems to work is if I have lots of distance from my family.
I have a wonderful network of friends and my children and my partner are very supportive.
Yet at times I find myself doubting their faith in me too. This has got easier over the years and i think this is the way forward, to surround yourself with people who you know you can trust and love and support you for who you are.
I also think you need people who are honest with you and who can explain your own behaviour and understand the behaviour of others in a non-biased way. This for me helps me more than anything else as i then have somebody else who will show me honestly how to change my own behaviour and attitudes to help me believe in myself.
Take care
Soph
